What is Ayurveda? | Print |  E-mail

Ayurveda "the science of life", is a system of holistic health care which evolved on the Indian subcontinent about 5000 years ago. Established by sages who introduced the original system of meditation and yoga, Ayurveda surpasses all modern health care systems in its range of therapeutic modalities. The main objective of the Ayurvedic system is to restore and maintain the metabolic equilibrium of body, mind and soul, and was officially recognized by the "World Health Organization" in 1976. True health is not just the absence of physical ailments. A healthy person, apart from freedom of any physical morbidity, should be happy mentally, sensually and spiritually. This unique holistic and integrated approach to health is one of the main features of Ayurveda. For this reason it's so relevant especially in today's stress-filled world. There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique:

1) It's suggestions will often be different for each person according to his/her innate, individual body and mind constitution
VATA (ether + air),
PITTA (fire + water) and
KAPHA (earth + water).

Most of the time we will find double constitutions, e.g. VATA/PITTA or KAPHA/VATA ... about which we need to learn how to balance them. With the help of a proper diet, physical exercise, meditation, Yoga and the help of Ayurvedic food supplements, we can get aware of our individual equilibrium. Then we begin to learn how to bring our system back in balance.

2) Everything in Ayurveda is validated by observation, inquiry, direct examination and knowledge from ancient scriptures and life experience.

3) Ayurveda understands that there are 3 bioenergies (VATA, PITTA and KAPHA) that influence nature and human being, which consist out of the 5 elements ether, air, fire, earth and water. These 5 elements are in a different percentage in all beings. For example in the human body VATA is responsible for the movements and the nervous impulse, PITTA for the metabolism and the enzymes, and KAPHA for the physical structure and stability.

4) Ayurveda developed originally in Ashrams where people gathered around one master in order to search the truth in themselves in a master/discipleship. These truth seekers (Sanyasin) found out that different combinations of herbs, spices and fruits could maintain the strength of body and peacefulness of mind and give them longevity, so they had enough untroubled time to search for the truth.
